When Trevor Story first joined the Red Sox in 2022, it took him several weeks to nail his timing at the plate after getting barely a week’s worth of at bats in spring training. This year, fresh off an extended rehab assignment following a lengthy recovery from elbow surgery, it appears Story only needed a couple of days. After starting the year 0 for 9 Story has begun heating up, and on Sunday he delivered his best effort of the season, going 4 for 4 with three doubles, two stolen bases and two runs scored. In each case he was driven in by Adam Duvall, who went 2 for 4 with four RBI, including a towering three-run home run that effectively capped off Boston’s 6-3 win over the Detroit Tigers.Story started things off with a ground rule double to right field, and his next time up in the third he knocked a single and immediately stole both second and third. Though ruled out initially, the call was overturned on replay and Story trotted home moments later after Duvall’s R...

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A gunman opened fire Sunday night at a prominent shrine in southern Iran, killing one person and wounding eight others in an attack that followed another assault there months earlier, authorities said. Officials offered no immediate motive for the attack in the city of Shiraz at Shah Cheragh, which draws Shiite pilgrims to its domed mosque and the tomb of a prominent member of the faith from its earliest days. However, Iran has faced attacks in the past from the Sunni extremists of the Islamic State group, who view Shiites as heretics. Iran also faces lingering unrest and economic turmoil amid tensions with the West.Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency quoted Ismail Qezelsofla, a deputy governor for security in the country’s Fars province, as offering the casualty toll. Fars province Gov. Mohammad Hadi Imanieh told Iranian state television that a single gunman carried out the attack and later was detained by security forces. He did not offer any motive f...

BERLIN (AP) — A record-setting Norwegian mountaineer pushed back Sunday against claims that she could have done more to save the life of a Pakistani porter who slipped off a narrow trail near the peak of the world’s most treacherous mountain and died there after several hours. The circumstances of Mohammad Hassan’s July 27 death on K2, the world’s second-highest peak, sparked ongoing controversy, with two climbers arguing that he could have been saved if all those on the mountain that day had aborted their climb and focused on getting him down safely. The fallout from Hassan’s death overshadowed a record established by Norwegian climber Kristin Harila and her Sherpa guide, Tenjin. By climbing K2 that day, they became the world’s fastest climbers, scaling the world’s 14 highest mountains in 92 days.Harila told The Associated Press on Sunday that “in the snowy condition we had up there that day, it wouldn’t be possible to carry him down.”“I’m sure that if it was possible tha...
