Katie Von Schleicher Gets Down in Nashville: Brooklyn-based songwriter and musician Katie Von Schleicher told us about her Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings experience.Katie Von Schleicher: I’m not the finest concert goer. I’ve fallen asleep for the duration of a Grouper show I was psyched to see, spaced out watching Ahmad Jamal, talked over Big Thief in a room that holds 30 people.Still, I’ve seen a lot of good ones, and enjoyed the ones I slept during. For my “favorite” I’ll choose a formative experience, seeing Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings in Nashville in 2007 or so.I was majoring in songwriting at college and they shipped us down on a bus to sit in the Warner Bros offices daily and get lectured by some mainstays like Rodney Crowell and the woman who wrote “This Kiss” for Faith Hill. One evening they closed down a small dive and let this small group of us, songwriting idiots, experience a duo Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings set. I cried like a baby, doing that thing w...Billions of snow crabs went missing around Alaska. Scientists now know what happened to them

By Rachel Ramirez | CNNBillions of snow crabs have disappeared from the ocean around Alaska in recent years, and scientists now say they know why: Warmer ocean temperatures likely caused them to starve to death. The finding comes just days after the Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced the snow crab harvest season was canceled for the second year in a row, citing the overwhelming number of crabs missing from the typically frigid, treacherous waters of the Bering Sea.The study, published Thursday by scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, found a significant link between recent marine heat waves in the eastern Bering Sea and the sudden disappearance of the snow crabs that began showing up in surveys in 2021.“When I received the 2021 data from the survey for the first time, my mind was just blown,” said Cody Szuwalski, lead author of the study and fishery biologist at NOAA. “Everybody was just kind of hoping and praying that that was an error in the s...Bay Area News Group boys athlete of the week: Ryan McKendry, Liberty football

SAN JOSE – Four games into the season and almost all the major concerns regarding the San Jose Sharks are being borne out.Playing the NHL’s most difficult schedule to date, the Sharks, without Logan Couture and Mikael Granlund, are not only having all kinds of trouble scoring but have also developed a penchant for giving up deflating goals at the most inopportune times. And without Erik Karlsson, the Sharks’ present defense corps has combined for one assist.Add it all up and the Sharks, who begin a five-game road trip on Saturday in Nashville, are the NHL’s last remaining winless team with a 0-3-1 record.“Listen, we all knew the challenge we had on this homestand, right? Let’s be honest,” Sharks coach David Quinn said Thursday after his team’s 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins. “We feel like we’re not that far off.”The combined record of the Sharks’ first four opponents, Vegas, Colorado, Carolina, and Boston, before Friday’s games, was a remarkable 15-2-0. KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he spoke with President Joe Biden about future U.S. support for Ukraine, and Russian President Vladimir Putin visited a military base near the invaded nation’s border as the warring countries prepared for the winter and next year’s combat operations.Almost 20 months of war have sapped both sides’ military resources. The fighting is likely to settle into positional and attritional warfare during the approaching wintry weather, analysts say, with little change along the more than 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line.Zelenskyy said late Thursday he spoke to Biden by phone about “a significant support package” for Ukraine. Western help has been crucial for Ukraine’s war effort. The U.S. president is expected to ask Congress on Friday for billions of dollars in military assistance for both Ukraine and Israel. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the latest U.S. pledges to back Ukraine would bear no fruit in the war....Jim Jordan digs in for a third vote for House speaker as Republicans refuse to give him gavel
