Beloved pets in Canada rescued from wildfires by volunteers who stayed behind

Wildfires forced Amanda Dengler to flee her home in Canada’s Northwest Territories three times in the past 18 months, and each time her cats have evaded her attempts to bring them along. The latest time, Dengler had to stay away longer than expected, and joined the many residents who have turned to networks of volunteers who are rescuing animals from communities threatened by Canada’s record year of wildfires.Dengler said she tried to catch her three cats on Aug. 13, when she left her home in the town of Hay River because of a nearby wildfire.“I think they picked up on my fear and it kind of drove their fear a little bit, and they were not cooperative,” she said. So, she took her two dogs, a suitcase of clothes and her electronics with her. She filled a bathtub with water and left an open bag of dry food on the floor for the cats, thinking she’d be gone for a few days. Once it became longer than that, she looked for help. That’s when she saw a message on Facebook from Dr. Michel...Mariners tie Texas for AL West lead, beat Royals 7-5 behind Suárez 3 hits, 3 RBIs

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners tied Texas for the AL West lead, beating the Kansas City Royals 7-5 on Friday night behind Eugenio Suárez’s three hits and three RBIs, which included a go-ahead, two-run single in the fourth inning.Seattle was 10 games out of first at 47-48 before play on July 20, but the Mariners have gone on a 25-8 run. At 128 games into the season, this is the latest the Mariners have had a share of first place since 2003. “It’s really big for us,” Suarez said. “We’ve been grinding all year long and now we are on top on the leaders. That means a lot for us. We’ve been grinding. We never quit.”Kansas City led 3-2 before Suárez’s fourth-inning single. Seattle built a 6-3 lead in the fifth when Teoscar Hernández scored on Austin Cox’s wild pitch, and Josh Rojas had an RBI single.Kyle Isbel cut the gap to 6-5 with a two-run homer in the seventh against Matt Brash. Suárez hit a run-scoring double in the eighth off Taylor Hearn and...49ers trade quarterback Trey Lance to Cowboys for 4th round pick

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have traded quarterback Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round pick less than three years after trading three first-round picks to draft him third overall.Lance had lost the competition to Sam Darnold to be the backup to Brock Purdy in San Francisco earlier in the week, setting the stage for his departure on Friday just hours before the Niners played their exhibition finale against the Los Angeles Chargers.“When we told him that he was going to be the three, if he could find another opportunity that was good, we’d allow him to do that, and he did,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “We feel he’ll be better for it, and I think we will, too.”The move is a remarkable backtrack following the hefty investment the Niners made in hopes of Lance becoming a franchise quarterback.San Francisco traded three first-round picks and a third-rounder to Miami in 2021 to move up from No. 12 and draft the untested Lance third overall. But th...Fukushima residents are cautious after the wrecked nuclear plant began releasing treated wastewater

IWAKI, Japan (AP) — Fish auction prices at a port south of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant were mixed Friday amid uncertainty over how seafood consumers will respond to the release of treated and diluted radioactive wastewater into the ocean. The plant, which was damaged in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, began sending the treated water into the Pacific on Thursday despite protests at home and in nearby countries that are adding political and diplomatic pressures to the economic worries.Hideaki Igari, a middleman at the Numanouchi fishing port, said the price of larger flounder, Fukushima’s signature fish known as Joban-mono, was more than 10% lower at the Friday morning auction, the first since the water release began. Prices of some average-size flounder rose, but presumably due to a limited catch, says Igari. Others fell.It was a relatively calm market reaction to the water release. But, Igari said, “we still have to see how it goes next week.” The decadeslo...More evacuation orders rescinded in B.C. fires as warm, dry weather returns

Evacuation orders in the Central Okanagan region of British Columbia continue to be rescinded as more residents are allowed to return home. The Central Okanagan Emergency Operations Centre says it has lifted a number of evacuation orders throughout communities in West Kelowna, Westbank First Nation and District of Lake Country.Meanwhile, crews say they were carrying out an aerial controlled burn Friday to combat the McDougall Creek wildfire, which forced thousands of residents in the Kelowna area to flee their homes earlier this month.Emergency workers are also again warning boaters to stay off Okanagan Lake in the section between the W. R. Bennett Bridge and Fintry Provincial Park to accommodate firefighting aircraft that may make use of the water in the fight against wildfires. The McDougall Creek wildfire has burned about 123 square kilometres of land since being discovered on Aug. 15.Cooler and wetter weather earlier this week — including heavy rainfalls in parts of the Okanagan a...Daily horoscope for August 26, 2023

Fatima Ezzahra Gardadi of Morocco took bronze. The 31-year-old Shankule said the Ethiopian team worked together to make it difficult on the rest of the runners to keep up. “After we got rid of the rest, then it was a battle with my tough teammates,” Shankule said. “Gebreslase is a strong athlete and she wanted to defend her title.”Of the 77 runners who started, 65 finished in a race that began with temperatures at 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit) and soared to 29 Celsius (84 Fahrenheit) by the end.
