HOUSTON (AP) — Prized rookie Jasson Domínguez hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning to help the New York Yankees to a 6-1 win over the Houston Astros that completed a three-game sweep Sunday night. It was the second home run in three career games for the 20-year-old Domínguez, who became the youngest Yankees player to go deep in his major league debut Friday night when he hit a two-run shot off Justin Verlander in his first at-bat.Houston’s weekend slide came after a five-game winning streak and it left the Astros a game behind the first-place Mariners and tied for second with the Texas Rangers in a tight AL West race. For the last-place Yankees, this series was a bright spot in a dismal season. It was their first sweep since taking three games from Kansas City from July 21-23 and the first time they’ve swept the Astros since September 2013.Gleyber Torres added a solo homer in the ninth to push the lead to 4-1 in his return after missing two games with lower back tightness....Novak Djokovic wins in straight sets to reach the US Open quarterfinals. He faces Taylor Fritz next

Novak Djokovic did not encounter any of the sort of trouble he did in his previous match, eliminating qualifier Borna Gojo 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 on Sunday night to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals.Djokovic — who has won three of his men’s record 23 Grand Slam titles at Flushing Meadows — needed to come back from a two-set deficit in the third round before eventually winning in five against Laslo Djere. This time, Djokovic played far more cleanly and was in control throughout. He finished with only 12 unforced errors, while Gojo made 40.“Just glad to get through in straight sets,” said the second-seeded Djokovic, who already is assured of replacing Carlos Alcaraz at No. 1 in the ATP rankings next week.Djokovic won five of the big-serving Gojo’s 15 service games while only getting broken once himself.Next up for Djokovic will be a matchup against No. 9 seed Taylor Fritz, a 25-year-old from California, who is the only remaining player in the men’s bracket to not have dropped ...Man killed in Lakewood motorcycle crash had turned life around, family says

Q. I’m only 25, but my peer at my old company is interviewing for a new job and asked me to be a reference. I’m excited! But what does this mean — what do I have to do?A. Congrats on the honor! Whether you’re 25 or 65, my insight is the same. First, find out from your peer the type of roles they’re pursuing and to alert you when they’ve gone far into the interview process. Typically, a reference isn’t called after the first interview but rather closer to a job offer.Identify the skills you should highlight. Ask your peer about the skills suited to the jobs they’re pursuing that you should emphasize with specific examples. Perhaps if time management is a critical skill you can speak about an example your peer demonstrated that hit the ball out of the park with time management when deadlines were looming.Once you have this information, you don’t have to do anything else until you’re contacted by the employer. Then, I’d ...Easons making Methuen matter

As Methuen grows into one of the premier programs in Eastern Mass., one family is at the center of it all.Courtesy of senior quarterback Drew Eason and younger brother, running back Shane Eason, Methuen is a Div. 1 favorite as the MIAA 2023 football season begins. The sport has been featured within the Eason family for decades. Family patriarch P.J. Eason was a standout running back for Everett in the 1990s. He’s maintained that passion coaching both Drew and Shane in their Pop Warner days and ever since.“My family is the definition of a football family. My dad taught us everything he knew growing up,” Drew said. “The love I have for football comes from him, and how as I have gotten better and better, it’s stayed with me.”Drew’s athleticism has always been apparent. An early growth spurt tempted him to focus on basketball, but he elected to remain a multiple-sport athlete maturing as a quarterback through tackle and flag football as a member ...David Fincher debuts ‘The Killer’ at Venice Film Festival

LIDO, Venice, Italy – Michael Fassbender may be “The Killer” but like Hitchcock or Spielberg, it is director David Fincher who looms large as its real star.A violent, often black-humored descent into the mindset of a professional hit man, “The Killer” world-premiered Sunday night at the Venice Film Festival minus Fassbender and co-star Tilda Swinton due to the actors’ strike.Cinema has a long and venerable tradition of the lone assassin, which Fincher, 61, said in a press conference was appealing.Assassins are attractive because, “It’s a very simple, compelling straight line drawn. We took something people know — the goals of an assassin – which is fun to illustrate. It’s high stakes. It’s also extremely procedural before you exhale and pull the trigger.“But I think this is more a revenge movie than an assassin movie. The corpses he leaves on the side of the road don’t fit in any way shape or form on the schedule he has for himself.”Which is part of the joke, the disconnect be...Editorial: Strict price controls sending insurers packing

Make price controls strict enough, and eventually they’ll produce shortages. California homeowners are learning that the hard way.State Farm is the largest homeowners insurance company in California. In May, it announced that it won’t be accepting applications for new policies. That’s odd. Companies with a dominant market position don’t usually walk away. But now, State Farm looks like a trendsetter.Farmer’s Insurance, the second-biggest player, is limiting how many new homeowners policies it issues. Allstate, ranked No. 4, has stopped selling. It’s hard to keep up with the exodus. AmGUARD Insurance, connected to Berkshire Hathaway, is out. Berkshire Hathaway had the third most market share in 2022.Liberty Mutual, No. 5 on that list, will not renew business owner policies at the end of this year.It shouldn’t be hard to understand why this is happening. Something is preventing these companies from making money. Things are so dire that they believe it will be more profitable to walk a...Schoen: If Biden steps aside, could Gavin Newsom challenge Kamala Harris?

Right now, there is little reason to believe that the Democratic nominee for president in 2024 will be anyone other than Joe Biden. Still, the question of who would be Democrats’ “Plan B” looms large due to Biden’s age, fitness, and his son Hunter’s ongoing legal drama. If, for whatever reason, Biden is unable or unwilling to seek a second term, the front runners to be the next leader of the Democratic Party would likely come down to two Californians: Vice President Kamala Harris and current Gov. Gavin Newsom. While any vice president is the most obvious choice to succeed a president, Harris’ low polling numbers have caused many Democratic insiders to consider other high-profile politicians who could mount a last-minute campaign, like Newsom.Indeed, new polling by my firm, Schoen Cooperman Research, found that Harris’ favorability – just 41% favorable – was even lower than Biden’s (46%), and recent NBC polling revealed that Harris was viewed more negatively than any other Vice Presid...Latest news
