Few Republicans have confidence in elections any more

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 18:36:43 GMT

By Christine Fernando | Associated PressSUAMICO, Wis. — Kim Pytleski could barely sleep the night before. She replayed the PowerPoint slides in her head, packed her notebook and took a deep breath. The clerk from a rural Wisconsin county north of Green Bay was preparing for a public meeting to explain the election process to residents. She didn’t know who she would encounter. Would some deny the results of the last presidential election? Would the conversation get combative? Most importantly, would she get through to anyone? They were questions Pytleski never expected to ask herself when she started the job in Oconto County more than 14 years ago. But since then, election conspiracy theories have taken root in the rural, heavily Republican county in northeastern Wisconsin. It’s among large swaths of the country where distrust of voting and ballot-counting, fanned by former President Donald Trump’s false claims of a stolen election, maintains a stubborn grasp.Pytleski...

By Lisa Mascaro | Associated PressWASHINGTON (AP) — With a push by allies of Donald Trump, far-right firebrand Rep. Jim Jordan appeared Monday to be shoring up support to become U.S. House speaker, winning over reluctant Republicans who have few options left two weeks after Kevin McCarthy’s ouster. One by one, Jordan, the hard-charging Judiciary Committee chairman, has been peeling off detractors who view the Ohio Republican as too extreme. A major pressure campaign from Trump allies including Steve Bannon and Fox News’ Sean Hannity has helped quickly build support. Tuesday’s scheduled floor vote could turn into a showdown.“I feel real good about the momentum we have,” Jordan said outside his office in Washington.Ahead of a private GOP meeting Monday evening, Jordan took a cooperative tone vowing to “bring all Republicans together” if he becomes House speaker after the ouster of McCarthy.“The country and our conference cannot afford us ...

Key injuries and poor execution doom the 49ers in their first loss of the season

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 18:36:43 GMT

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco’s high-powered offense that seemed unstoppable to begin the season looked awfully pedestrian after losing two key playmakers in a game against Cleveland’s stellar defense. With Deebo Samuel missing most of the game with a shoulder injury and Christian McCaffrey sidelined for most of the second half with an injured oblique and rib, the 49ers struggled to move the ball for most of the second half in a 19-17 loss to the Browns on Sunday.“Any time you lose real good players like that, it’s a challenge,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. “But that’s stuff you’ve got to go through. That’s part of football. I just thought we made too many mistakes, missed assignments and stuff that happened.”San Francisco (5-1) had scored at least 30 points in each of the first five games, but didn’t come close to that against the Browns.Five of the Niners’ first six drives after halftime netted no yards and no fir...

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 18:36:43 GMT

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — President Joe Biden will travel to Israel and onto Jordan Wednesday to meet with both Israeli and Arab leadership, as concerns increase that the raging Israel-Hamas war could expand into a larger regional conflict.U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Biden’s travel to Israel as the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip grows more dire and as Israel prepares for a possible ground attack on the 141-square-mile (365-square-kilometer) territory to root out Hamas militants responsible for what U.S. and Israeli officials say was the most lethal assault against Jews since the Holocaust.Biden is looking to send the strongest message yet that the U.S. is behind Israel. His Democratic administration has pledged military support, sending U.S. carriers and aid to the region. Officials have said they would ask Congress for upward of $2 billion in additional aid for both Israel and Ukraine, which is fighting Russia’s invasion.Blinken made the announcement ea...
